Chinook Salmon Run Guide

A Journey of 1,200 Kilometres

Every year, Chinook salmon complete one of nature's most extraordinary migrations, swimming over 1,200 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean up the Fraser River to spawn in the streams around Valemount. This remarkable journey reaches its climax in August, when the fish arrive in the Robson Valley -- and there's no better place to witness it than from Terracana Ranch Resort, situated right along the Fraser River.

Rearguard Falls

Rearguard Falls, located just 24 km northeast of Valemount, marks the farthest point that Chinook salmon travel up the Fraser River. Watching these powerful fish attempt to leap the falls is a breathtaking sight. A short, easy trail leads from the parking area to a viewing platform overlooking the falls. The salmon typically arrive in late July to mid-August, with peak viewing usually in the first two weeks of August. The roar of the falls and the determination of the fish make this one of the most memorable natural spectacles in British Columbia.

Swift Creek & George Hicks Park

For a closer look at the spawning process, visit Swift Creek in the town of Valemount. Here, salmon can be observed in the shallow waters as they complete their life cycle. George Hicks Regional Park, adjacent to Swift Creek, offers interpretive displays and programs through the Valemount Visitor Centre that explain the salmon lifecycle, the ecology of the Fraser River watershed, and the cultural significance of the salmon run to First Nations peoples. It's an educational experience that enriches the natural wonder.

Planning Your Visit

The salmon run season is short but spectacular, typically spanning late July through mid-August. Plan your visit for the first two weeks of August for the best chances of seeing the salmon at Rearguard Falls. Early morning visits tend to be quieter, with softer light for photography. The run also attracts wildlife -- bears and eagles come to feed on the salmon, adding to the spectacle.
